Power button doesn't power up Computer.

Hi guys,

I have recently upgraded my rig but I cannot seem to power up my computer using the power button, instead I have to flip the on/off PSU switch. Once it's up and running and I can do all of my general activities/gaming just fine. This was the same with my system prior to upgrade, though I needed an upgraded anywho!

The computer is fully powered at time of writing this. The power LED is actively flickering here and there, the reset button does it's job as does the power button when the machine is running so I don't think the F Panel connectors are the issue here.

Could it be an issue with my power supply? I ran everything through a calculator posted on another thread several days ago prior to ordering the parts and my current PSU seemed sufficient hence why I did not order another one.

My (new) rig:
NZXT H440 New 2015 Edition Case
Asus Z170 Pro Gaming Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
Intel Core i5-6600K 3.9GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor
TeamGroup Dark Pro 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz Dual Channel Kit
Asus GeForce GTX 970 DirectCU II OC Strix 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Carried over parts from previous build:
2x Corsair SSD's @ RAID 0
1x mechanical 72000rpm Seagate 1TB HDD
Corsair AX670 PSU (I think it's 670 I know it's just north of 600w but <700, the NZXT PSU cover panel obstructs me from checking  )
Phanteks PH-TC14PE CPU Cooler
Asus Phoebus ROG 7.1 Sound Card

I'm pretty sure it's the power supply but posted wondering if anyone has had this before (though I guess chances of similar causes are somewhat neither here nor there!)

Thanks!

Are you sure that the power button cable is correctly plugged into the right header (and in the right orientation) on the motherboard?

Do check the power switch header lead. Some cases have a switch that only works one way round, others will work both ways round.

Another possibility is a bad power switch on the case itself.

Thanks for your responses.
The positive end is marked on the back of the connectors and double checked the motherboard manual to ensure they are connected to the correct pins.

If the machine is running, the power button powers down the computer. Pressing reset reboots the machine which POSTs fine and loads OS.

Appears to be related to cold start up.

What happens when you shut down and then try to restart by pressing the power button on the case?

Has this always happened with your current case?

Just trying to rule out a bad power switch before you replace anything!

Are you sure you have all the cables connected correctly ?
The power led shouldn't flicker it should be solid, the hdd led would flicker with activity.

Borealis: Nothing happens at all. This started happening with my old case/rig roughly 2 months ago. I get the same thing with new parts except the only thing that hasn't changed is my power supply.

dholdi: As far as I can tell from the back of the connectors and the motherboard manual, everything is connected to where it should :(.

If it happened with your old case too then I would tend to agree that its your power supply.
Could you borrow one to try ?

I may be able to borrow my brothers if I can distract him from SWTOR for a while but I too think it could be power supply, well it was my initial gut feeling. Guess I posted more for double checking than anything so I may take a look at PSU's shortly. Thanks :)

yea my money would be on the power supply. ive had this problem myself.
I would get it changed asap in case it decides to go pop..

Just had a quick look on Google. Think the led for the power button also is for hdd activity, so should blink.

Have you tried shorting the power on pins on the motherboard? If it works, it would rule out a broken power button.

it would suggest a broken power button, not rule it out!

My desktop now powers on using the reset button after the power button died :(

PSU is likely as others have said, seen symptoms like this happen a couple of times. Cold-start issues are normally PSU. Not a max-wattage issue but a failing PSU one.

i had similar issues a while back, psu would not 'latch' on when power button pressed. i had to turn off/on at psu and hit the power button quickly after. if i got it right it would power up, otherwise nothing. bought a new psu and all sorted.
