Hi, i have a dell studio 1749, i am finding that i really have to push the power button much harder than needed to get it to power up.

it's about 2 years old now, so is out of warranty, i was maybe even wanting to sell it soon but i am worried that this will really devalue it. it works perfect other than that, i was wondering if its easy to fix if indeed it can be and would it be expensive?

Would turning the machine off and wiping some WD40 around the area help, if some seeped through to the connections if they needed a big of a clean? or would that be dangerous?

below is a pic i took from the net of what the button on mine looks like, forget the battery led bit, it was the only pic i could find of it:

thanks

I wouldn't go spraying WD40 on it!

Personally I'd take it apart and look for loose bits of switch or broken solder joints. If everything looks ok the button can be taken apart (carefully!) and clean the insides then put it back together. If that's too technical I'm sure you'll be able to get a replacement switch from ebay.

either the micro switch is faulty or the button mounting has moved / become damaged you will have to take it apart to see

would anyone know how i would get to taking it apart, there doesnt appear to be anywhere obvious where it comes apart?

the screen bezel is either held on with clips or screws, if no screws, its a case of carefully prizing the plastics off, but be careful, those dell bezels have a habit of snapping
