Power consumption?

I am currently running a i5 2500k at stock and a 7870xt. I am thinking about attaching my pc to play films and stream to a 1080 T.V. My question is, does the power consumption scale, or would it be cheaper (in terms of power consumption) to run a basic dual core and either on board graphics or something like a 5450?

Well, a slower computer would use less power. But you'd have to buy another computer. Media over the network to a smart tv, or to one of the many tv box things (wd tv live et al) may be a better choice than a dedicated tv computer.

I have a HP microserver which never switches off, with ethernet running to a TV. That's been flawless since I bought it. Uptime is a couple of months, as I unplugged it while not paying attention.

My spec in sig running heaven benchmark 4 devours a measly 430w at the wall. Thats including my 24" lcd monitor. My old i7 920 with sli'd gtx 470's took 630w in games. Power consumption of modern pc's with the energy saving functions turned on are so good. Tbh, it's not worth even counting what they use. Your kettle or microwave will up your leccy bill a lot more in the grand scheme of things.
