Power Consumption

What do we think the next gen graphics cards are going to look like in terms of power consumption compared to what's currently out? Is anything known yet? And in general, are we going to keep seeing GPU power consumption increasing with each new generation? Will we all be needing 3000W PSUs in a few years?!

I'm slowly upgrading my system, but keeping power consumption/efficiency in mind as electricity prices are high. My current setup is as follows:

AMD Ryzen 7600X
Asrock B650M-HDV/M.2
Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120
MSI Radeon RX 6600 MECH 2X 8G
Be Quiet! L8 530W
Lexar NM790 2TB NVMe
Corsair Vengeance DDR5 RAM 2x16GB 6000MHz CL30

Both the 7600X and RX6600 are undervolted currently.

I'm using an old 60Hz 1080p monitor but am waiting for a new 180Hz 1440p to arrive. I think I'll need a new GPU to take full advantage of it, so I also bought a new 750W power supply in anticipation of upgrading to a more powerful graphics card. I was planning on waiting to see what the new Nvidia and AMD graphics cards look like in terms of price/performance/efficiency early next year, but may end up getting something like a 4070 Ti or 7900 GRE if the price is too high. Having just had the new power supply delivered I'm wondering if I should have got an 850W instead, so am wondering whether to return it and rebuy (it's still unopened).

What's everyone's thoughts?

I agree power consumption needs to come down. 600W would be ridiculous! Luckily (?) I can't afford a 4090, let alone whatever price the 5090 is likely to be, so I don't think I need to worry about that level of power consumption

Based on current rumours do you think the 5060 and 5070 are likely to more power hungry than their 4000 series counterparts too?

And what do you think about returning my 750W PSU and buying an 850W instead? I think the difference is only around £10. I bought the 750W initially because I thought it might more more efficient when drawing a low wattage, as I spend most more time web browsing and working (Excel, Chrome, etc) than gaming, but maybe the 850W would be more future proof.

Will need their own dedicated psus at this rate. I ‘overspec’d’ to a 1000w and am wondering if I should have gone higher.

Ha, yes, I notice there are a couple of dual PSU cases on the market already!

The 5070ti is rumoured to be 300w and the 5070 250w.

I suspect the 5070ti will likely replace the 4070ti Super, which is 285w. So a slight bump up.

No leaks yet on the 5060 but I’d suspect that will be comparable to current gen.

OK, interesting, I'm leaning towards the 850W then, just for safety. Presumably that would be enough for a 4080/5080 or 7900 XT(X) level card if I was able to spend more?

You could re-use that old PSU just for the GPU, with one of those Y cable PSU adapters.

Hmm, good to know. At the moment my plan is to use my old parts for a second PC which I'll keep at my parents' house, then whenever I'm back there I can do a bit of (slightly more old school) gaming. I just need a case to build it in.
