The end of the power cord, the bit that plugs into the laptop needs to be positioned in a certain way to pass power into the unit. I don't know if the power cord bit is at fault or whether theres something loose inside, how would I find this out?

It's a fairly common laptop problem, yes.

But...if it's the power cord that's the problem then you're lucky. Do you have access to another cord you can try? That would narrow down the problem to your cord....otherwise you'll need a motherboard repair/replacement most likely...which isn't that great at all.

its imported from the states i dont think the warranty is valid here. Do these type of things happen a lot?

Are you sure it doesn't come with an international warranty? My T43 comes with one, surely a Compaq does too.

I don't think so but to be fair, I know little about that kind of stuff.

I do know though a lot of house insurance policies cover accidental damage.

:)

Had to re-solder a power connector inside an Armada a few years ago. It had 'dry jointed'.

You may be able to get the maintenance manuals off the HP site - I did for the Armada, as getting into laptops can be tricky.
