Power devil rx470 has glue on the memory edges

I have seen a few reviews with the exposed PCB on the Powercolor rx 470 and it has a clear glue around the edge of 2 memory chips and onto the pcb, but all other Rx 470's do not, so is the glue an indication of a cheap card ? I cant see if my one is the same but I'm just curios because I bought one a few weeks ago. and i am starting to think I should have gone with my first choice of the sapphire 480 nitro.

Glue is actually a cost adder, they do it to help reduce what is termed as coil whine as it acts as insulator to stop coils vibrating.

Thx guys, you put my mind at rest I thought it might be there to reinforce the solder lol, on a Plus note it works great and I really like the card I don't over clock my stuff anymore so it should last me 2 years + before I upgrade again.

How does glueing two memory chips and the corners of the GPU stop coil whine? Just wondering, as could understand it on the caps.

They used glue on the Xbox 360 to try and stop the pcb warping away from the bga GPU. Can't see there'd be a similar issue on cards though as different thermal/pressure from the sinks.

I dont know and I thought coil whine was from the caps myself, I find it strange that its only on 2 memory chips and it looks like its on the 4 corners of the gpu

heres a link to the pic, Its the 8 gig version

If its to do with whine then it is about damping resonation which might not manifest from the most intuitive places depending on the design (though normally it would be on the coils in cases of coil whine).

This is all very misleading.

Why would glue on memory chips or "caps" (capacitors) reduce coil whine ?

I would have thought that any glue would be applied internally to the wire coils or ferrite cores themselves, although some glue might be put on the exterior of the chokes as an extra preventative measure. No need to glue memory chips or caps to prevent or reduce coil whine.

It's to try to stop solder fractures from heat warping.

Having had another look at the pics, that's what it looks like. Only on mem and gpu corners seems to suggest it's trying to help stop the BGA mounted parts on those areas from coming away due to thermal change/shock.
If it goes under the edge of the chip, it can make the chip edge lift if the epoxy/glue expands at a different rate to the chip under heat.
