Power issues - PSU or overheat?

Hey all!

My desktop isnt getting much love at the moment as there are some power issues that seem to have got worse.

I built the PC maybe 2-3 years ago using a platinum PSU from my old mining rig that has been sat in a cupboard doing nothing for 3 years. Originally, once every so often (like one time in 50), pressing the power button would kick the PC to life for 1 second, then it would cut power. After toggling PSU switch and unplugging kettle lead etc eventually it would power on and run fine. I rarely use it now as I work on my laptop, but now when I do use it for gaming for gaming, it has taken to cutting power randomly even when booted. Again, it wont power back on with a button press - its completely dead. my thoughts are "overheated" or some power safety cutoff. Having had more opportunity to test, it seems that if I leave it plugged in, the power wont turn back on at all, but if I completely disconnect the power supply and leave for a while, it powers on again fine.

So, any thoughts?

Id like to rebuild a desktop anyway, and go for a SFF, but don't want to use / sell on dodgy parts so want to get this sorted first...

Psu is a (not cheap) Corsair HX1000 80+ Platinum

Have you tried the paperclip trick to see if it powers up without the rest of the PC?

If it is the PSU I imagine it's still under warranty so you could RMA it, those units are covered for ten years.

Update:

So this morning I decided to begin a bit more diagnostic searching for the cause of the problem. I played minecraft and after a short while, it switched itself off. Left it for two hours and wouldn't power on. I was then fairly sure it wasn't an overheating issue stopping to from powering on so I flicked the ATX PSU switch to off at the back and waited ~ten minutes, then flicked it back on, hit the power button and it fired up.

I feel like it seems almost certainly some kind of power protection block that needs isolation from mains to eventually reset... but still, is this Mobo or PSU based? I have not tried the paperclip trick - tbh I'm a bit unsure that (upon the fault arising) I could that set up quickly enough, given that a few mins of power isolation seems to allow things to work again.

The paper clip test isn't relevant as the PSU powers back on after a while, it seems either the PSU is faulty after heating up and then tripping out and comes back on after cooling. Its the easiest to replace and test but it could be a faulty motherboard doing a similar thing with a faulty component on the board but the PSU is the easiest to start with.

I've turned off an MSI afterburner profile I forgot I set on the the gfx card.
No power off since I made that change, but as it's an intermittent fault, it's too early to tell if that's solved it
