Hey i was wondering how much power im gunna need for a AMD san deigo 3700+ X1800Xl etc (basically a mid range gaming/work pc) would 400w be ok or am i looking at 450-500?

400W would probably be enough, but raw power isn't the most important thing about a PSU. You want to be looking at the amperage on the 12v, 5v and 3.3v rails and see if they are stable.
Have a look at Seasonic, Enermax, Tagan and Hiper are all very good PSU manufacturers. If you want a quiet PSU then look at Seasonic and Tagan.
I would avoid any generic make of PSU as these are likely to be low quality and will probably make a good job of frying some of your components if it goes bang.

400W from a 'good' manufacturer is fine, 400W 'generic' is a no-no
Have a look at the ones recommended by SiriusB, although I have heard some unreliability issues of Hiper PSU's
