Been having some very random power-offs, today whilst i had the puter off i changed the vid cable to an HDMI. powered on, got nothing at all. had a check of cable/plug seatings etc, eventually pulled the HDMI and returned to the old cable, and the puter powered up.
thought that was odd, and the end of it. nope.
Just sat back down, and the power turned off after being up for about 3 hours - nothing strenuous at all. light was still on on the USB wifi dongle, but puter wouldn't wake via keyboard, pressed the case button nothing. lights still on the mobo, and the GTX980, but nothing from the case button. turned off at the power switch, eventually it powered up ok. eah time i turned the power on the lights were all ok, but the case button didn't respond - seems well seated though.
any thoughts as to what's going on?

TIA

Could be many things.
From motherboard and parts on it to graphics card.
Even power button of the case might be failing and staying partially stuck sending erroneous signal to motherboard.

I'd unplug everything and then replug it back in making sure to double check for any bent pins or anything. If this doesn't work then I'd assume a faulty part but it would most likely be the PSU
