Power on/off vs always on

I have always kept my laptop on, but for obvious reasons have started turning it off when not in use lately. This has coincided with two separate hardware failures during the boot process after the laptop had been completely shut down.

As I am hoping to purchase a new gaming laptop soon, I wondered if anyone has any thoughts on how the strain of the power off/on cycle and it's dramatic temperature changes, compares to the added strain of being in use without respite. I have encountered conflicting thoughts on this issue online.

Use Hibernate. No boot cycles and no flaky sleep behaviours. Laptop is physically powered down when not in use so won't surprise me with any unexpected updates. I reboot properly when I install updates (try to do it weekly but generally forget).
