Power Over Ethernet

Quick question....

If a network port on the wall has POE can I run a normal ethernet cable direct to the NIC in a PC or do I need some kind of splitter to prevent the NIC card being damaged ?

If it goes to POE switch then it'll detect whether the device needs power (ie, a PC doesn't but a phone does), if it goes back to a power injection hub of some kind then maybe not.
