Power problems

Over the weekend, my broadband and router power adaptors failed on me. This is strange because they were both connected to a surge protector. The broadband modem is the blue ntl:250 and the router: linksys wrt54g.

I've used a spare 12v power adaptor and they both seemed to work fine.

My questions are:

a) How could TWO adaptors fail at the same time when they were both on a surge protected cable.

b) The ntl:250 router needs a 10v adaptor - but seems to work happily on 12v, could this lead to problems later on?

Have any of you experienced this sort of thing before?

edit: I got a reply from NTL/Virgin that the broadband router has a surge protector built in. I had asked them for a new adaptor since I could not source a 10v one.
