So i've got a samsung R20 laptop that came with Vista. it's a merom core2duo 1.73, 2gb ram etc.

Vista was useless so i've upgraded to Windows XP. The trouble is, I now have no power saver mode, etc. It's stuck at full blast which means I have a jet engine sounding, roasting hot laptop and all i'm doing is browsing t't interweb.

Dunno if its this version of XP that omits those features or whether all XP's dont have it..

I've seen these modes on XP laptops before, and they did ship this exact model with XP..

This is my first laptop, so i'm not quite the expert I am with desktops with it.. the software peculiarities etc

Does anyone know of any way to get the power profiles back? 3rd party prog perhaps? or am i stuck, have to put up with it or go back to that waste of resources and time known as windows s**tsta?

I've long ditched windows power profiles and used RMClock....
you can undervolt your chip too to get more battery life if required.

Hurm.. this is weird.. throttled it using rmclock to 800mhz, 1.1625v (1.063 in cpuz) and it's still 66*c at 3% load

don't use throttling
use P-state transitions
edit: then you can assign even lower voltages for the low states.
whereas throttling uses 1 global voltage
just put the lowest and highest voltage in, rmclock will calculate the bits inbetween

I've got a 2ghz, running at 1.05V @ 60 degrees under full load- with a laptop cooler underneath. without, it reaches 66-70, i think.
unfortunately, I don't know how you are going to control your fans, am assuming your bios will sort it out when it reaches a particular temp.
I've got a dell, and ik8fangui is for dells; maybe there's one for samsungs?

Yeah i think i'm going to strip down a vista, use this lappy's genuine licence number, and put vista back on it.. its running WAY too hot.. hate to think what it'd be like at full speed.. crash, probably.

800mhz, fan on full, undervolted, no load.. 67*c.. Used to be silent in vista, a lot cooler too.. really, really weird.

This is hotter than any pc i've ever owned before (all of which I built) by a good 15-20c.. and i had the hottest of the mhz wars cpu's.. slot a athlon, XP2100 palomino, prescott P4...

This is supposed to be a mobile core2..

well, the core2s are rated to about 100 degrees or so, so there's no danger that your chip will go. However, fan speed/sounds is a bother....
