Hello all!

I've been lurking on the forums here on and off for a while now, and have received some great advice without even having to post, so to start off with; thank you.

But to my main question - Power. I was hoping there would be a thread on the main page dedicated to power and power issues etc.. but unless I'm being blind/useless/both, I couldn't see one.

My issue is i'm building/have built a HTPC (spec below) and I'm a little concerned about the amount of amps the system is pulling, as I am finding it hard to get any concrete numbers on the amount of amps my hardware requires. I know the wattage is cutting it close, but it should be more than enough to handle everything at stock values, with a little headroom.

The issues I'm having are I can't get the GPU to work. I get an error saying that "you re not using a display connected to an Nvidia GPU", it's showing up in device manager with the correct name but showing that "this device is disabled as it has reported and error". That being said, it is a refurbed card, and I had to send the first one back as it too was faulty. I think that this second card may be faulty too, but I don't have another system to test it in, (without a massive hassle anyway).

SPEC:

CPU: SB i3-2120
RAM: 2x4gb kingston value ram 1066/1333
SSD: OCZ vertex 3 60gb
MOBO: Asrock h61m-gs
HDDs: 1x1TB seagate barracuda, 1x2TB WD cav green
CASE: Antec fusion black w/VFD
some Lg blu ray reader/burner (not installed)
2x120mm antec tri-cools
GPU: EVGA Nvidia GTX 460 se 1gb
PSU: Be Quiet! pure power hybrid modular 430w

The PSU has 2 12v rails, though not fully independant. 12v1 has max 22 amps, 12v2 has max 25 amps, (going from memory), but combined total it can only supply 33 amp. Whilst looking on le interbutts, I have come across people/posts that say the gtx 460 se requires 26 amps min, 14 amps min blah blah all kinds of numbers.

If my maths is correct though, then 33 amps @ 12V = 396 watts. GPU and CPU combined require just over half of that wattage. CPU 65 watts/12v = 5.5 amps, GPU 150 watts/12v = 12.5 amps. That leaves ample wattage and amperage for the rest of the system... or am I missing something here.

As far as I can see, the PSU is, although a little more headroom would be nice, sufficient for this setup. I just want to eliminate any doubts about my PSU, as I can't find much official info regarding the amperage that all the components will be pulling.

Thanks for taking the time to read my first ever post :)

Power wise, you should be fine with a good brand 430W PSU, such as yours. My HTPC has similar-ish specs to yours but I'm not running a GPU (just the on-board) and that pulls a maximum of 80W from the wall, so you've got loads left to deal with the GPU.

From the messages you're getting, I'm thinking you're running the video feed from the motherboard output rather than the graphics card and the GPU is shutting itself down as it's not being used. Have you got the video lead plugged into the 460, or onto the motherboard output?

Oh, and congratulations on your first post! :D

Lol no, It's connected to the GPU. I have tried on both DVI outputs and the mini-HDMI and still got the same results. The GPU's fan spins up, and at the moment it's just a very expensive vga pass-through for the iGPU! I don't have any other video or audio drivers installed, and have tried clean install option in the Nvidia installer, and I have also tried it on a fresh copy of windows.

I want to be certain before I request an RMA, especially i f I send it back and they find no fault with it. I just think it's unlikely that the second card would be faulty too. But they are refurbed cards.
