Hello,
I`m looking for a good quality case that will last me a very long time. I was considering the Akasa Eclipse or Mirage but will probably get the Silverstone Fortress FT01. I`m now considering the power supply.

My question is, what power supply should I go for? I know I should get a modular one. Probably initially the PC won`t be used for gaming but I might buy a monster single graphics card later (but probably not Sli). I may use four or more hard disks however and might later have a blue ray writer also. Basically the power supply needs to be able to handle future expansion of the machine, future motherboards, CPU`s graphics cards. The machine may start off weedy (i5 or i7 920) but could end up an overclocked machine with great graphics card

I know some graphics cards use an 8 pin connector and these are popular with 850watt and higher power supplies. But some 750watt supplies come with plenty of 6 pin connectors that of course can be adapted.

Is the general rule to buy the highest wattage possible or can afford? Does that come with much higher electricity usage ? I mean would a 1000 watt supply in a machine that really only needs a 600 watt supply waste a lot more electricity, or will it be as efficient as a 600watt supply when the draw on it is only at that lower level?

Typically people overestimate how much power they actually need. For example i have an i7 rig that is running off a 600 watt OCZ psu- this wouldn't have a problem running a pair of 4890s in crossfire.

In relation to electricity usage there shouldn't be a difference between a 1000 watt psu and 600 watt one solely because one can provide more power. What you should be looking at is the efficiency of the psu, as a 600 watt psu with a crap efficiency would be heavier on your bill than a super efficient 1000 watt one.

But seriously if you don't intend on running some crazy tri/quad sli setup then you will be wasting your money on a 1000 watt psu.

Thanks for the info and chart.
I`m surprised, I thought it would have been a recommendation of 750w minimum. Looks like 600 is the choice for me.

Thanks
