It's not for me - I have a corsair HX850 which does the job perfectly...

I have recently built a PC for a friend using a mixture of my cast offs and other bits. Spec is:

I7 950 @ stock
Akasa Venum CPU cooler
Gigabyte UD3R X58
2 x 5870 XFire
500Gb hard drive
Samsung DVD

And here is the problem: A powercool 850w psu that looks and feels like it belongs in the blue and white section of your local supermarket

He doesn't want to spend too much more money. I was wondering what the cheapest recommended reliable PSU would be to power that lot.

Cheers

Hi there,

This anandtech review looks at the power consumption of 5870 CF (it also uses an i7 900 series CPU) and at maximum load it can draw 664W.

Therefore, to keep a decent bit of headroom I would suggest going with a good quality 700W PSU or bigger. The cheapest one I would recommend is this one.

Is Extreme outervision a bad indicator for Psu recommendations.

I'd agree with that. Remember the 664 W load will be from the wall so assuming 90% efficiency it's outputting 604 W. Also note that's with an overclocked CPU and OCCT is a stress test, most games won't get close to that.
