i need a new power supply. i currently have a 750w antec truepower blue modular and it seems to be struggling.

I phoned overclockers yesterday to enquire about the "xfx 850w xxx" edition that was on the weekly deals, as there is a review saying it only has 2 6+2 connectors for gpu's and i wanted to check. i was told that it wasn't a good power supply and that you can't buy a decent 850w power supply for £125, and that if i bought it, it would probably only last a few weeks!!!!

obviously this isn't a very good thing to say to a customer who wants to spend money. Reviews suggest xfx power supplies are pretty good. maybe i was wrong!

Anyway, moving on to my question. I have used the online psu calculators and i've had results ranging from 620w up to 1050w so i thought i'll ask here and see what the pro's think i need.

here's my rig specs:

i5 2500k running at 4.4ghz
asrock extreme 4 z68 mobo
8gb ocz intel xmp memory @ 1800mhz
2 x HD6870 in xfire
1 x Asus D2X pcie sound card
2 x 60gb ocz agility 3 in raid
3 x 1tb wd black hdd's
1 x blu ray/dvd rw drive
1 x dvd rw drive
1 x memory card reader
5 x 120mm fans

What wattage do you guys recommend and what brands would you suggest? (obv not ones that'll blow my rig up!)

cheers

hi ive got the same PSU (antec 750w) runinng near the same but current only one 6950, but plannin on gettin a second. it should be fine for that rig. RMA it if u can. if not and want to get a new one would get the xfx 750w or 850w. XFX is just seasonic rebranded rly good psu's.

also ur memory wont be able to run at 1800mhz as the 2500k limited to 1600mhz

i just checked and i'm running 1800mhz on an xmp profile. Also the difference between running one 6870 card and two is approx 130w so quite a difference!

thanks for the info regarding xfx being rebranded seasonic psu's. will put them back in the race!

yh there is a difference but my system with one 6950 is only using about 450w of power. ur motherboard will prob say that about ur memory. but cpu limits it to 1600

Not entirely sure who gave you that information however it is incorrect and I do apologise. XFX are one of the best manufacturers for PSUs and I can surely say that they are extremely reliable and give great performance.

As for the XFX PSU, it does have only 2x 6 pins, so if you are using two graphics cards in Crossfire then a Corsair one may be preferable. Or anything else that would be suitable for your graphics cards.

Not sure if that what the person on the phone meant, or if it came across wrong, not entirely sure. But the above are my thoughts. :)

i'll take your word for it on the memory. regarding the power output. is that 450w on idle or at full power? how are you monitoring your output?

even the lowest output suggestion on one of these psu calculators suggested 620w. My truepower blue is at least 3 years old so maybe it's not rated for xfire use.

i made the call at 14.30pm yesterday. maybe you can find out from this. If your information is correct then he also gave me the wrong information regarding the 6+2 connectors as he told me he read off the side of the box that it had 4.

Give me two minutes and I shall get the product out the warehouse and I can just confirm for definite. Strange that the review says otherwise, maybe there has been different revisions of this PSU.

the psu calculators normally over compensate, mine is only a couple month old. using afterburner, and its says 60% (might of been a bit less than that actually cant quite remember) thats with skyrim on ultra setting at 1920x1080

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-000-XF&tool=3 the on the reviews on it one person said that they used it to x-fire 6950's so the must be 4 6+2 conneters at least

Here you go, it looks like it DOES have the 4x 6 pin connectors. This is something I will have to update on the product descriptions so no one gets confused for next time. :)

So it is perfect for your system. :)
