Power supply emitting an ungodly noise

PC crashed and failed to post, did the usual of manually resetting the BIOS using the jumpers, turned it back on and the power supply made a horrendous noise. Had my head right next to my PC so at first I thought it was the internal speaker (it's a similar high pitch, loud squuek/beep) but quickly realised it wasn't and pulled the plug.

Turned it back on without it connected to anything in my PC, and it didn't make the noise, tried again with it connected to an old motherboard, and it does.

Anyway, it seems quite obvious that the power supply is buggered. Problem is I don't have a compatible power supply to hand so I can't boot and see what the damage is.

My worry is that it was connected, with the power on, for a good 5/10 seconds, anyone hazard a guess if there'll be any damage to my other components from it?

It's a Corsair HX520.

Doubt It did take anything out, mine went recently too didn't take anything out either way you should rma it to corsair if it's over 12 months old if it's under 12 months you can go through the etailer.
http://www.corsair.com/warranty/rma_form.aspx
then use interparcel.com cheapest delivery to the netherlands I found afraid it's £17.60.

Yea but had to hunt around a lot for that if I'd took others advice I'd have paid £26 on parcel2go or £28 at PO.

Have you checked there's nothing stuck in the fan or anything?

Yeah, turned on on literally connected to nothing and the fan turns fine, it's definitely more of a beep than a squuek (it's also very loud, think 'microwave beeping loud'), and only when it's suppling power to something.

Had trouble with it before, apparently HX520s aren't happy with Abit IP35-E motherboards for some reason, I'm not the only one who's had problems.

Tempted to eat the loss and just get a new one. Anyone got any reccomendations?
I realise the Corsair HXs are usually reccomended mind, but it's either a different PSU or a new motherboard really, and since the PSU needs replacing anyway...

Why eat the loss ? send it to etailer and get a brand new replacement from corsair if under 12 months old if over 12 months send to corsair and get a brand new replacement for £17.60.
Corsair don't repair or even check then they simply send you a brand new one.

Because the problem seems to be caused by a compatibility between the PSU and my motherboard, if I get a replacement I'm just going to have the same problems again.

Although now I'm not actually totally convinced it's the PSU...

It makes the noise only when connected to the motherboard with the graphics card plugged into it, doesn't have to have the power cable to the graphics card, just it be in the motherboard. I'm not even totally sure the noise is coming from the PSU any more, it's so loud I can't really tell.

So it could be the PSU still, or it could be the motherboard, or it could be the graphics card. Or all of the above.

Arrrrgh.

Edit: Yeah, think I might have fixed it, hooking it up to a monitor now to check. 10 points to whoever guesses what ridiculously stupid thing it turned out to be.

Not quite, bad power cable to the gfx card, had to use a new one. In my defence it was already plugged in, there's just something wrong with it...

Still won't boot, but it's progress, and no more damn beeping.

Maybe one of the 12v rails has failed, hence no 12v on power cable that was connected to the GPU. Perhaps your hard disks are also not getting 12v power, try switching those to different power leads too. I'd be concerned about the PSU if one of the power outputs isnt working. (Although it could be just a broken wire on that power cable, rather than electronics problem).

Well it's a modular PSU, so it's the actual wire that has a problem, using a different one sorted that.

Not sure what the problem is now though
