A friend made a big mistake in his purchase of a cheap psu for £10. Yep you know where this story is going already!

Power supply was so say rated at 400w (obviously the w didn't stand for watts on this occasion)

The system is an old Athlon XP 1800 cpu with a GeForce4 Ti 4200 graphics card, not overclocked but requiring 130-200 watts when running according to my plug-in power & energy monitor. Why this high, I think the 4200 may be to blame.

Two months after the cheap psu was installed and BANG!...........

At Last! My prophecy of a cheap psu blowing up has happened, I kinda felt like Noah before it started raining, when I slated cheap psu's and friends had them work fine for months.

Actually the psu didn't blow up it just died, the bang was me throwing it as far as possible at the local recycle centre. :D

Replaced it with a Tagan TG330-U01 330W ATX Silent PSU from OVERCLOCKERS for £32.89! What a bargain for this psu.

The cheap psu weighed only 812g whereas the Tagan weighs 2kg! and the tagan is rated at 330watts.

The 330watt tagan may not be for high spec pc's but its build quality was excellent, as good as I would expect for a 500 or 600 watt psu. It even came with a manual!!

lol, glad you're pleased at last. The Tagans really are superb units. In fact, I recommended one to a guy on here only a few minutes ago. :)

Cheap psu's can also increase your electric bill as when used at full load their efficiency can be very poor. The ATX spec cites that at full load a psu must be at least 70% efficient. Some bargain bucket psu's can be as low as 53% and not stable on voltage. (3.3v,5v,12v etc)
