Hi, maybe someone can help me.

Thinking of building a new system but don't know what to go for in terms of PSU ... This is the plan (subject to change) thus far - the board, RAM and Processor are part of an O/C bundle (it works out cheaper like this).

  • Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz Sandybridge CPU (Overclocked to 4.50GHz)
  • Asus P8P67 DELUXE Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
  • Corsair XMS3 16GB DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel (4 x 4gb sticks)
  • Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
  • OCZ Vertex 2E Bigfoot 120GB 3.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive (for the OS)
  • 6 (yes six) SATA 2 HDD - totalling 5.8 terrabytes (taken from current system) (1tb x 3, 2tb x1 400gb x 2)
  • LG BH10LS30 10x BluRay-RW / 16 x DVD±RW Drive
  • Coolermaster HAF X Gaming Tower Case
  • Other cooling still to be confirmed.
  • Card reader and anything else I might have forgotten or want in the future
So, would I get away with using a 750 watts supply or should I go for something greater? Is there an easy way of working this out 'cos my maths is atrocious?

Thank you :)

If budget is no issue Corsair are good but expensive, if you want to save a some cash take a look at the XFX PSU's they do a non modular 850W for less than £80

Have you thought about getting an Nvidia card for CUDA?
I'm just used to ATI - I've had them for years. I'm open to all suggestions though.

EDIT: I don't think Nvidia have full size HDMI sockets - I know I can use an adaptor, but I like to keep extra cables to a minimum.

That sounds like a plan - I'm not too worried about modular - it's gonna be hidden anyway, but I do want reliable.

Thanks again everyone.

I'm now considering changing my case plan to the Antec 1200 - I'm already using an older 900, and while it hasn't got the same cable management / tooless fitting options, I do prefer the sleeker look (and I won't mess around inside it all that often).

So, with that in mind, has anyone here got any experience of the Antec CP 850 Watt unit?

Well once it's in the case I'm unlikely to ever touch it again, so that's not an issue - and it's only a couple of quid more than that non-modular Corsair you just linked to.

Am I right in thinking the larger size might be better for cooling?

Just to point out, you say you have 6 3.5" HDD and an 3.5"ssd. the Haf X only has 5 3.5" HDD bays, of course there is plenty of 5.25" bays that can accommodate a HDD with the appropriate HDD rails.
whereas the antec 1200 comes with 9 3.5" HDD bays (3x3) as standard so you can fit all your HDD's.

That's a good point actually - especially as I'm gonna add an SSD for the OS. Although I might cut down on my HDD collection and get a bigger drive to replace the 2 x 400gig units - it's turning into overkill!

The other thing I've noticed is that the Haf X doesn't come with any 3.5" front panel adaptors for card readers etc. Whereas the Antec does (I got one in my existing 900 rig).

Of course, there are workarounds for everything, but the less of those the better.
