I'm considering getting the i7 oc'ed bundle however i've just realised my power supply only has a 4pin cpu power connector and i believe the x58 boards have an 8pin? Will a 4pin suffice or will i need to change my power supply? Its a 900w psu by the way.

x58 boards have 2 x 4pin. One 4pin is usually capped off, I think it's not ESSENTIAL to put both in, but id imagine it stabilizes your system to some extent.

Don't take my word for this until someone can verify :)

You need to post a complete system spec for power requirements to be guessed at eg will you be running a nvidia 7200gs or a gts 295

I've got the system in my sig running on a 600W psu, but it's a good quality one, what make is your psu?

I believe you can get adaptors for 4 pin to 8 pin, as its just gnd and +12V connectors I believe

Using an 8 pin lead gives better stability for overclocking, although you can use to 4 pin ATX lead if you don't have an 8 pin one on your PSU...

Sorry yeh it will be for the i7 oc'ed 4.00Ghz bundle and it will be running a 4870 1GB. So i can buy a 4pin to 8pin and just connect it to a standard 4pin molex from my power supply?

No, you either use the 4pin on its own and possibly limit yourself to no overclocking or its new PSU time.
I'm quite supprised that a 900w PSU doesnt have and 8pin or a second 4pin connector, what PSU is it?

The 4 pin to 8 pin adapter goes onto the 4 pin ATX lead from your PSU not a molex connector...

This is what you want:

thanks for the replies, well i've read some scary stories about the 4pin connector burning out and motherboards breaking due to it being overloaded on only a 4pin. Might have to consider a new psu with an 8 pin. Have been looking at the OCZ 600w modXstream, would this be sufficient for an i7@4Ghz and a 4870 1 GB?

Thanks

Once again, i reccomend Corsair PSU's, a little bit more money, but the TX650W is on the T.W.O offer atm which ends on wednesday, it comes with the 8 pin and plenty of other cables.

If you ever think of SLI or CrossFire, then consider the 750W so you don't need to use any adaptors for cards with 2x6pin requirements
