I'm looking at http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-062-OP.

My current power supply is shown in this picture: http://s12.postimage.org/kcjmpuw17/DSCF2254.jpg
I want to replace it because the fan on it has always been pretty loud, with a steady whirring/hum

If I understand it correctly, from what picture shows the output on my current power supply is 250W. It's on a 5 year old Packard Bell PC. It has the factory hard drive, but I have upgraded from a CD drive to a DVD/RW drive and to replace the onboard video I have added a dedicated video card - nothing impressive, it's 64MB if I recall correctly. So I'd guess my power needs are a bit more than what the original build needed, but not substantially more.

Is it OK to replace my 250W power supply with a 500W power supply? Not that I particularly want 500W, but I can't really seem to find anything lower than that anyway.

If I get a 500W power supply, is that automatically going to make my PC consume more power, or is it going to stay the same as now and only use more if I were to add more power-hungry components?

I have never replaced a power supply before; do I need to consider anything about the size of the new power supply or will they all fit just the same?'

Edit: Also I just realized that my power supply has the fan on the back - I need to get another one that has the fan in the same place, right?

Isn't OcUK a brand, though? Most of the OcUK power supplies have 4 or 5 star ratings on here too.

Technically they're all branded, but by unbranded they mean brands with bad history / no proven track record / generally considered good.

Look at corsair, seasonic, xfx, ocz (Plenty more to pick, but i'm not up on PSU's so someone else will come along soon and give the best options)

To be honest, I think that OCUK PSU will be fine for the OPs PC. It's a 5 year old Packard Bell with very low power consumption.

In my opinion the only problem with cheap PSUs is when you push them close to their limits by overclocking or using high end GPUs.

Having said that though, theres an Antec, OCZ or Coolermaster PSU for only £13 more.

Guys he is looking for a cheap powersupply for a old cheap pc.

Why would he need an Gaming / Powerhouse grade psu for a simple non power hungry machine.

I'm all for not skimping on the powersupply, but there are expections, like when it doesn't matter to much.

JD, I'm sure it will be fine getting that one, OcuK won't sell something thats not fit for purpose (by that I don't mean fit for Gaming or high end gpu's, I mean for general office tasks and standard home pc's)

Regards
Michael

Definitely seems a fine replacement JD.

Its not going into a high end system so dont worry about peoples comments.
