Hi,

Can some one recommend a good power supply unit to run either a 9800gtx or 4870 card.
I game at 1600 x 900.

What's the rest of your system? How much do you want to spend?

A Corsair TX 650W (on offer) or a HX 520W would be my choice. These will give you headroom to upgrade later too.

Just looking at the Corsair TX 650W myself for a 4870. Are these considered the best then?

Corsair certainly produce good units, yes. The "best" is often quite subjective.

The TX series are supposedly not quite as high quality as the HX series (which are made by Seasonic) and the HX series are also modular which is useful.

You can't really go wrong with either though.

Just had a look at the Seasonic as you mentioned them. They look good but quite expensive. I guess you get what you pay for though.

Hi
Thanks for the guide on power supply units much appreciated.

Mike.

Was thinking about the Corsairs the other day, as ive had my PSU for about 5-6 years now, it still works fine like, but i just fancy replacing it for peace of mind, as thats a long time that.

Was thinking about getting the VX 550w, as they cracking PSU's the Corsairs, and it should be able to power better cards than my 4850, as my PSU has only got 1x 12v rail at 28a, so im limited in upgrading.

You can't go wrong with the Corsairs. :)

I own both the HX620 and the HX1000 (got the HX1000 for £130 new before the price went crazy)

Great PSUs, don't think I'd buy any other now!

The tx650 is made by seasonic, the 750 is made by CWT.

I was running an iCute 700W while waiting for an RMA on my HX520.

Kept the iCute in for quite a few months after receiving the new Corsair, but swapped it out a few days ago. The Corsair is quieter and runs cooler; definitely a nice piece of kit.

Easily handles my rig without a hiccup.

The TX650 is an oddball, its a Seasonic. The other TX's CWT (should have read the whole thread).. There are a couple of other instances where Corsair have used different OEM's for different models within the same series.

CWT isnt a bad oem either though, they've been in the PSU sector for years, and in most of the power tests, the CWT psu's have been almost identical in noise, and stability as the Seasonics.

I'd also consider the Be Quiet! range. The thermaltakes toughpower range aren't bad either for less money and if mistaken are also built by CWT.

Ive had my Be Quiet for over a week and still haven;t got round to changing my 750w toughpower but hey ho.

Dont be tempted into thinking that the more wattage the better. With my specs my computer uses 168watts and only 300+ whilst playing a game at 1920x1200 so if cost is an issue then as p4radox mentioned the 520w corsair is a good choice.

As long as you spend a bit of cash on any of the brands recommended in this thread then you can't really go wrong. My Tagan 480W is still going strong after 4 years; and that runs my power sucking 2900XT no problems!

Corsair are good, and TBH most of the power supplies stocked in OCUK are good quality units, much better than almost any 'no name' high peak wattage junk from other shops.
