power supply went bang

This is a bit weird.

My PC was off i was downstairs watching TV and heard a loud bang.

Now is it me or generally power supplies go bang when the computer is turned on and not off! I didn't even have the power switch on at the mains.

Thank god the computer was okay and that the power supply just blew.
 
It was a cooler master 500w psu which i have had for 3 years.

I had a surge protector on the wall socket but the rest of the things i have connected should have gone bang as well. Again the power switch at the wall socket was off, it's an odd one.
 
Capacitors in the power supply retain charge for a considerable amount of time after power is cut. My guess would be that one of those just broke down or something shorted out, maybe from an insect or something.

That's what i thought the capacitor just went.
