Power Supply Wiring Question.

I used to run a rig with 2 power supplys and obviously for the one that wasnt connected to the mainboard had to have the 2 wires modded together so it would start up.

Like a total unthinking noob I cut the wires real close the the 20 pin plug and now want to use the psu as the main power source, so my question is what would happen if I just plugged it in as it is with the 2 wires still modded?

Im guessing that probly wouldnt be the best idea and my only option is to seperate the wires again and put them in there original connecters, as I have cut the wires real close to the plug its going to be easier said than done.

Would I be right in thinking I could just cut myself some wire off of a old psu and give the 2 wires some extensions, would I need to use the same coloured wire or are they all the same type?

Any help would be great :)

Come on guys 1 of you must know, Im guessing the wire must be all the same stuff so an extension must be possible. I will soon find out.

it don't matter what colour the wires are mate! extend them and get them into the plug, and it will work!

The chosen colour of wire is just to make them easier to use. Like a plug. You always no what colour goes to what pin in the plug because of the wires sheaf. Inside the plastic coating they are just copper wires.

So you can remove the wire as long as you replace it well enough and with some wire that is capable of carrying the same current. A.k.a don't replace a mains cable lead with wire that would be found in a clock.

As long as you connect the connect things it won't matter.

Cool, thanks for the replys, I managed to fix it up, I found a basic psu and cut the 20 pin plug off, pushed a couple of the connecters out and replaced them in the psu that I want to fix.

For joining them up I used a couple of those joining blocks where you push wire in either end and screw down the top, that should be ok I guess.
