hey all,

does anybody know what size of power supply i will need to satisfy this system?

cheers

The higher the better, but quality over quantity.
500w would be the bare min. imho.
Personally if it were me, i'd got for approx. 700w of a good make, like Corsair. Certainly don't scrimp on the psu, not when your cpu and gfx cost over £200 each.

Why didn't you recommend a 1500W PSU then?

If you actually thought on what he ment. A lot of people feel conftable going for higher as its more future proof for extra gpu's and what not. There is nothing to worry about when you get a high quality 750w Corsair.

Imo, 500w Name branded will do you fine with that build, but you may aswell get a 750w as you have the head room to upgrade. Put it this way mate. Mabey a year down the line, you want to add another 5850 but you got a 500w psu. That means you will have to get a higher watt psu so your paying for it twice mate.

If I was you, I would get around 750w Psu now, so then your fine for then you upgrade.

right. considering a 5850cf rig would suck up somthing in the region of 350-450 watts...you'd recommend a 750w psu for future proofing? just how many extra 5850's do you think the op is likely to stick in the pc?

500w is easily enough for one card. 600w is enough for two. any more and you are kidding yourself if you think you need it for two gpus.

Also Foomonkey, have you had a look at the Foxconn Bloodrage Gti X58 Motherboard. Very overclockable board which is very stable and in your price range. Also, better for crossfire or sli as the pci express slots are spaced out, so nothing to worry about the temps of the gpu(s)??

If you read the link andi posted, you will see on load, 2 5850's will push out 550w's. Then you got to take into account his cpu, will he Oc? The hard drives, the case fans. 750W is very happy and up for the job.

thanks for the replies, i think i'll go with a 650W~750W Corsair one if it will be enough to run 2 Xfire later down the line.

i'll look at the other Mobo later as i am heading out the door to college now.

cheers :)

EDIT - i might overclock aswell so will 650W min be enough if i am running 2x gx cards down the line ? :P

650 is more than enough.

If you read the link it clearly states that the numbers reflect the "full system" not just the cards.

Here you can see, from the horse's (AMD's) mouth, the total power draw for a single 5850 is 151W.

Therefore, hence & thus, a 500W PSU is more than enough for one card, anything more is a waste.

i'm in a similar position, not sure what PSU to go for.

See thread:

I think for a single GPU and overclocking I would probably stick with at least a 550w (certainly no lower), but on the otherhand if like me you might want to Xfire / SLI later down the line make sense to go for something with a little more juice.

One of the best seems to be the Corsair HX750w but its a bit pricey (£119.99)

But then again the general concensus is not to "skimp" on a good quality PSU.
My other option I was considering was the OCZ ModXStream 700W PSU

Let me know what you decide.

ok? ... so i've got one guy telling me that 650W should be enough because as proven, it states on the ATI 5850 website that it only takes 151W max and another guy telling me that infact this is wrong because after being tested it was found that the power usage is infact double that + it goes up to 550W if there are 2 Xfired?

i'm confused on what to go with :)
