plugged my ipod in a few hours ago to update the firmware, was absolutely fine then. About 5 minutes ago I plugged it in and windows says:

"Power surge on hub port
A usb device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port.
For assistance in soliving this, click this message"

Does anybody know what to do to get my ipod working again?

You could try resetting it, the combination of buttons likely depends on the model, but you can find out on the Apple website.

Edit: If it has a click wheel try this:

1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

nope, no luck

Hmm, it might well be dead, have you got another computer you can try it on? Using a different USB port on a different computer, might help.

If it's under warranty with Apple then you could get it replaced.

Ah I see, strange, there are a few threads on the Apple boards about similar problems. You could always try getting a USB card or Hub, or reinstalling the USB ports by deleting their entries in Device Manager.

Might be an issue with Itunes as well, could always try a reinstall.

USB standard allows devices to draw only 0.5A/2.5W (some motherboards might not provide even that) so message probably means that power draw is exceeding that.

actually, i think it might be the cable, just tried it in another pc with the cable in the pc but not connected to the ipod, same message came up
Sounds like cable is slightly shorted.
I would discard that cable immediately before it fries USB port of some motherboard. (I guess it's probably some proprietary expensive cable)

I'll go next door and ask for one of their cables :p
