Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

I had a similar decision to make recently. Ended up with a Dewalt DPN1664 air nailer

I couldn't justify the Dewalt 18v versions and the other battery systems i'm in had disappointing nailers (Ryobi and Einhell both limited to 50mm)
That's way more expensive than Im considering. I'd be looking at upto £50 for either an air nailer or corded.

Thinking of getting a nail gun for doing some fencing cladding in the garden. I could hand nail everything of course (still might), but considering whether its worth getting a nail gun.

I have an air compressor so could go for an air nailer.

Or a corded electric nailer.

Or a Dewalt battery nailer (already on Dewalt system).

Any thoughts?

I just used outdoor coated screws for the last couple of fences I've done. Comes in quite handy if you ever need to remove any panels to get through.

If it was just the cladding I'd hand nail, but Im also thinking of a roof batten screen, and that will require fixings near the edge, which nail guns are better for as the nails are much thinner.

Hand Nail??

Come on, The man wants a new tool......We should fully support this...

I bought an electric nail gun, it was a revelation and one of the tools I wish I had bought sooner.

Thats how i felt after buying a collated screw gun for plasterboard.. After renovating 2 houses i was kicking myself for not doing so earlier.... Could have saved days

It’s on the list, although I dare not mention another property renovation to my better half as it may be used it on me.

This popped into my feed last night and it was the first time I'd seen a couple of the tools (such as the knockout one).

The entire Powershift line at the end targetting towards heavy duty construction and concreting was pretty cool too! Might be able to convince the GF to allow me to get the vibrating powershift one though....

my 2p is do not get an electric nail gun
i bought a tacwise corded nail gun and it is useless imho,it was only thin pin size and it could never flush a nail into anything
in work i used to use a paslode gas nailer for fencing, but that is way overkill for you for 1 fence:D

That’ll shake the fillings out your teeth if used right :). I used the Makita 18v vibrating poker at work and it was very good at what it did.

Compressor guns are fine if you have a decent sized compressor, or can at least keep it plugged in all the time. If you have to keep popping back to the house to recharge it can take quite a while (I know this from exp). Mine is frrom a brand called Rapid and would fire 50mm staples or nails into quater post oak (rustic fencing). 120ish I think.

I would buy into whatever battery system you're invested in or buy something Chinese with a battery/charger included off Amazon for 60 notes knowing full well it might be utter crud.

Fair enough. Axminster have a set which goes down to 1mm (brad point 3mm and up) but not cheap at £52 for the set (though Axminster don't usually rubbish)

Not sure how much longer Axminster will be around, didn’t even know they’d closed stores till I wanted to go to the Warrington one and checked to see what time they open

Yep, they downsized the one I used to go to. Online probably still gets the traffic but they only need to show a couple of models and handtools, consumables and that's it.

Take a look at how much stuff is out of stock on the website, bought all my original machines from there and love the place but talking to people in the industry and the boom time is definitely over

Anyone have a trend t14 router?

Odd question but do you *need* 1/2"? They tend to have more kick than a 1/4", are heavier and more powerful and the bits are longer.

I've wrangled with this before and managed with a Bosch 1200W 1/4" and a Makita 700W 1/4" hand router. And that's for a lot of stuff for guitar building and general DIY - if I had the need for 1/2" I'd be tempted to invest in a metal 2400W rutland router table (£800) but that's a different class. The 2200W trend has some comments and it seems for any serious the metal is too soft.
