Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

Anyone have any opinions on the Makita red Orbital Sander?

Don't want to spend a fortune so debating either the above or the Titan from screwfix or the Ryobi. All are around the £50 mark.

Just a heads up, Lidl have got their power tools on offer again. Looks like they have a cordless circular saw for £40 which i'm debating.

They also have a big ol' demolition breaker for £70 which seems very cheap.

Store only i believe and they usually sell out quick. I bought the Recipricating saw and Angle Grinder last time about and one store was down to scraps even when i got there (about 10 mins after opening)

If you want i can keep an eye out if i go but then you've got about £10 postage on top.

If you read the review on screwfix from divuk83, that's me. I would definitely recommend it.

Already regretting it as gives me less reason to buy the Dewalt circular saw i want. Still £120 for these 2, a laser line spirit level for my dad (stop him stealing mine), and some 3M Duct tape and 3M masking tape which will be better than the cheap horrid masking tape i've been using recently.

Can't compain!

Does anyone have any knowledge of strimmers? I had a cheap one years ago and it was rubbish but wondering if its worth buying a slightly better one? Its to edge the grass (large lawn) and also to trim areas where the grass meets the garden wall and the lawn mower misses a very small strip.

Petrol isnt essential l as I have multiple power points throughout the garden.

I've had this one for a few years now,

It's been brilliant so far and the auto feed actually works.......very well.

How do they even make a profit from that Circular saw for £40?

I'd get the Screwfix Deep TSTAK. It's £30 and has a foam bottom which you can cut out but more importantly it gives you space to store other tools.

Otherwise have you looked at twin packs which come with the case?

No idea. The reciprocating saw and angle grinder were £30 each but they were bare units. They seem alright though there is a very plasticky bit on the angle grinder switch which feels it'd break easy.

The charger and battery was then £16 I think.

So the saw with case, battery and charger and blade is ridiculous.

That's 4 parkside tools I have now. Cost about £180 for the angle grinder, reciprocating saw, circular saw, 2 batteries, 2 chargers and then the 240 breaker.

Any other brand and I expect you'd be looking at least twice that.

I think it may even also come with a tray at the top but don't quote me on that.

Mine didn't but I bought it somewhere else when it was about £50 at Screwfix.

Managed to bag a Dewalt DCH273P2-GB for £194. :D

http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-dc...i-ion-cordless-brushless-sds-plus-drill/4412f

Comes with 2X 5AH batteries, charger and kitbox.

Is there any point in buying something like this when they're moving on 20v and 54v?

I mean do they allow you to use the 18v batteries on their 20v/54v tools or are you stuck with their 18v range?

Was thinking about buying it and selling as a bare unit just to get the batteries/charger so I can be invited to the Dewalt range as all my tools now are Makita.

20V is just what they call 18V tools in the US

So DCH273 is the Brushless SDS drill. In the US it's marketed as 20V but over here it's 18V

As for the 54V stuff, i think that's only ever going to be for trade use given the cost and it'll be a long long time before it hits consumer level.

I imagine it would be too heavy for drills/impact drivers too.

What's the cordless angle grinder like? Are you able to put an over sized blade on it (by removing the guard first) and cut paving slabs/thick tiles or is it not strong enough?

I've noticed 90% of my angle grinding is on some type of concrete/masonry/tile and just 10% metal. Using a £20 corded Homebase grinder which is super but need cordless.

It's amazing what you get with some of these cheap power tools. I'm astounded at the shear size/weight of the kit with the Titan Sliding Mitre I got for £70! I also questioned how they make any money on that one.

I've only used it on metal to be honest. I wouldn't expect it to be great on anything substantial really.

I don't have any bigger discs so can't try that unfortunately.
