I'm trying to fix a G4 Powerbook, but not having much luck at the moment.

The main problem is that when booting, the grey screen where the apple is displayed is corrupt. With the apple appearing off center, two of them or sometimes just a garble.

I've run the disc utility and it claims that there are no problems. I'm not too keen on formatting and reinstalling because there is work on there and it isn't mine.

Any ideas? I've google'd but all thoughts there seem to result in the same - nothing.

I'd get in contact with Apple technical support. I haven't experienced it first hand but a friend has and has said it's top quality. :)

Most people on here being more familiar with PCs and with Macs tending not to fail so much, I wouldn't expect an overwhelming response on here.

But my advice would be to contact them, they do have a superb service I'm told. :)

Also, there's a third party Apple dealer in Bristol I think that offer a similar service of phone support. I'll try and track down the name and number for you.

Is this a hardware fault, Sound like it could be the onboard graphics or the screen, Either way they are both very expensive to buy and pigs to fit esspecially as the graphics is attached to the logic board (mainboard for us none mac'ers) and they are very well built, You might need special tools.

Then again it might be an OS fault, Does this happen even on the recovery cd screen?

Definitely get onto tech support. They're great.

Alternatively, take it to an apple retailer, who can have a look at it and send it away if necessary.

Have you tried plugging an external screen in? That will tell you if its a monitor or graphics card problem.

I had to have the logic board on my 12" PowerBook replaced a few months ago and it costs £300+ for that because I was out of warranty. Take it to the genius bar at an Apple Store, they'll be able to check it and advise you.

I recently managed to break the bit where the power plugs in (got the power cable wire caught under a chair, and when i picked the comp up, things bent...). This time I just ordered a replacement part and will attempt to fix it myself, which involves dismantling the whole thing as it seems the DC-in board is one of the first parts installed...

Although even putting it on an external monitor may not tell you anything as some mac's have 2 gpu's one for external and one for internal.

If it is hardware get it sorted on your household insurance, Or even get it writen off and pay extra and upgrade to the new macbook pro's.
