Hi,

I just got a powercolor hd4870 1GB DDR5 from oc, after getting it running I noticed that the fan does not automatically adjust its speed, infact its quite slow playing l4d it was reaching 75-80c.

I updated to Catalyst 8.12 drivers and fixed the fan speed to 40%, not it idles at a nice temp of 29c as opposed to 50-60c beforehand.

I would think though that I should not need to do this and the fan should autoamatically adjust its speed accordingly. :(

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, cool that its normal however is the fan not supposed to automatically adjust or am I off the mark here?

It's normal for 4870 to do this, it's safe for the card but the downside is your case temps will be affected by the GFX card running close to 90 degrees under load as I learnt. Between 5 and 10 degrees in fact and I have a Antec P182 case so you can imagine what it's like on non aluminium cases with good cooling deisgns!

I have a GTX260 now though and temps have dropped up to 10 degrees idle and 20 degrees when loaded.

yeh noticed that my case temp dropped with a higher fan speed, I can find a good balance of fan noise / heat, bumping it up just a few %'s.

cheers guys.
