Powercolor R9 280 driver

Hey folks,

I've just finished my first build this evening and have a couple of questions regarding the Powercolor R9 280 (non X version) driver.

Firstly, Powercolor's website only lists drivers for the R9 280X whilst it offers 270X/270 and 290X/290 versions in the same place. I've just plonked for the R9 280X driver and hope it works - is this okay?

Secondly, at the rate I'm going I'm never actually going to have a driver. The supplied disc always fails to install blaming some package or other. Therefore, I've decided to download the driver to install. The download speed is horrendously slow. It varies in predicted download time from 5 hours to 23 hours for a 275mb file. Even I know for Welsh broadband in the back of beyond that that is far too slow. It offers US or Taiwan when downloading (I'm guessing where I'd be downloading from) and both are similarly slow. I'm currently at 9.5mb after some 15 minutes. Anyone able to offer advice on how to speed this up?

Cheers

Ah, I wasn't aware I could use them from there. I'm quite the beginner.

Windows 8.1 64-bit. Thanks for the speedy reply!

Edit: Life saver, much better now! Shouldn't be more than an hour thankfully.

As far as i'm aware AMD drivers tend to be generic. Myself, I have 2x Gigabyte AMD GPU's and always use the drivers from the AMD site, as they are more up to date :).

Aye, seems so. Can't install atm though as I keep getting a fault about a package still (from included CD, 14.4 and 14.7 downloads - latter beta). I'm yet to update Windows but holding off 'til tomorrow as my first build has tired me out.

If updating and following generic advice from Google doesn't fix it tomorrow I'll no doubt be back then.

I know it sounds silly but have you tried extracting the AMD package before installation on your desktop?

Also, make sure you right click and select 'run as adminstrator' when you try to install. :)

It doesn't offer extraction in the menu - it is an unzipped file. I've moved it to the desktop just now and ran it as an administrator to no avail. My Windows 8.1 is fully up to date now. I'm at a bit of a loss now, I'm not especially competent in software matters.

Edit: tried AMD's autodetect installing software and it thought I had an AMD APU... No luck there. Any suggestions would be really welcome. The error specifically says: 'Application Install: install package failure!'. It crops up whilst Catalyst is installing components.

I don't know if it's relevant but in device manager there are two 'Other devices' which I think are my GPU. One being 'PCE Simple Communications Controller' and the other 'SM Bus Controller'. They both have little warning triangles on their icons.

This is the log is produces on every install attempt:

Existing packages
HydraVision

Packages for install
AMD Catalyst Install Manager
Final Status: Fail
Version of Item: 8.0.916.0
Size: 20 Mbytes

Other detected devices

Error messages

Application Install: install package failure!

Also, in Device Manager under properties on the card in the details it's giving me the problem code 0000001C. Not finding much on Google re: that code.
