Powercolor X800 GTO16 locking up

Hi all,

I recently built up a machine so maybe I did something wrong. Almost every game I have tried to play locks up on me. I have read the ATI sticky but most of the Bios settings do not seem to help.

I am running an Asus A8R-MVP with a AMD 3200 Venice core running an Arctic Cooling Silencer with 1GB of Corsair Ram.

The machine is running very lean with only XP SP2 and the latest Catalyst drivers installed (6.4 with CCC). Nothing is overclocked (no point really as I cannot get it stable at normal speeds).

My Bios is also the latest version from Asus (AMI Ver. 0309).

Now I used to get frustrated when the screen would blank out for 20-30 seconds and then reappear. It woul seem this is the VPU function kicking in. When I switched it off, of course, the screen just went blank and then required a reboot. Very few of the Bios settings in theh ATI sticky apply and I was wondering if anyone had a similar rig (mobo and graphics card combo) and had ever had any similar issues? If so, how did you resolve them?

Must I return the gc to OC or is there anyway I can isolate the problem? BTW, Aquamark never finishes a test. It also just crashes about 2 minutes in.

I appeciate any help.

Temps

When i use a utility to monitor it it would seem about 33-35 C at idle and about 50-53 by the time I have loaded it up after a system crash. What I mean is when the games hang, I alt-tab out, open up the program and get a temp reading in the 50-53 C range.

Not sure how high this is for a gpu but when I could carry on I could continue playing for 5-30 minutes before the same thing happened. If it crashed every 3/4 minutes I would suspect overheating but because it is irregular (after all, I have to play the same scenarios again and again and the crashes happen at different places) not sure if it is heat or ram or software glitch etc. That is why I am over in this forum. I have relatively little technical background.

I have the same gc / cpu and a foxconn board. Same problem.

Did you resolve this problem?

Also does your gc have a power input? It seems to me that the card is not getting enough power but I have upgraed to a Hiper 580 sli ready (after unsuccesfully trying a 480w)

Let me know if you got any answers and I'll let you know when my nw board arrives.

Yep 1.1 installed - catalyst won't install without it

also tried Omega drivers and had the same problem.

My card shows up in windows control panel as an X800 XL if that has any relevence.

Here is a link to my other thread concerning this problem Link

Sorry to double post but I'm about to RMA this card to OCer's for testing and I want to be sure they will not send it back charge me a tenner and say it's fine.

Or send me a new one that still does not work.

Can anyone give me definitive answer to the following:

Should the Powercolor X800 GTO 16 have an input for power direct from the PSU?

Mine doen't but all the pics on the 'net have. I think the card cannot get enough power from the motherboard, I have tried two mobos, but they are both Foxconn NF4K8AC-RS so I do wonder if maybe these boards have a problem supplying power to this card.

Any help before I send this catrd today would be appreciated.

Foxcon is apparently the largest motherboard maker (due to oem sales I guess), so I would hesitate to blame it on a dodgy manufacturer. The powercolor x800 gto16, does come with and without the power connector, as I have heard that the x800gto2 did with some batches. I would try to exchange it for an x850xt powercolor and pay the difference (I think its £111 now).

I would say that at stock speed the card should be able to go without the extra power connector, and that it would benifit if u were overclocking.

Thanks, I am only allowed to submit the card for testing and then only for a replacement of the same (apparently)

I got another Foxconn board (both my main suppliers sell only Foxconn the others sell very low level Asus and Gigabyte for small factor all on board stuff)
This one has SLI so as soon as I can I will get me either a 7600 GT or 7900GT depending on what I can get away with spending (lol).

I will RMA this board in the morning and when the replacement comes cack it can go into a box with the original NF4 board, the 480 Hiper, a AMD64 3000, 1 gb ram and whatever drives are kicking around.

Not sure what new card to buy so must do some research.

Thanks for all the help - it was the GC - DOH.

***Ouch €20 to post back***

Sorry to double post but I thought I would bump this instead of starting a new thread.

I just got my RMA on the X800 GTO and guess what, exactly the same problem. I rang OCers and the guy confirmed that it is a brand new card from stock.

Of course I have my shiny new 7900GT in my main box now so urgency is not as high as it was - although I would like to shift some of this excess kit I have lying around.

The 7900 GT works fine in both motherboards (one SLI one single PCIe) but the PC starts winking as soon as windows (and the drivers) load. Poblem goes away if no drivers are loaded for the card.

I feel convinced that these Foxconn boards are not able to supply enough power to this card. Not a fault as such because you could say that the X800 should have a power input, but very annoying.

Could thse of you with an X800 GTO or XL (the same card more or less I believe) let me know which mobo you are using.

I don't want to ship again to UK as it is €20 a go.

Of course there is a tiny chance that I got 2 bad cards - seems unlikely though. if OCers replace the card from stock do they send back the original box normally or an old one as I definatley got the old box back and the card was not sealed in its bag.

Which card are u using when the pc "blinks"? If u have problems with both cards then it must be something else.

Since u have a hiper 580w, it shouldnt be that. Are u using the external power connector from PSU to the graphics card? Edit: The 7900gt must have one even if the x800 doesnt.

No its not the PSU as I have a 480 & 580 w Type R to hand.

The 7900 is just sweet - I will never buy budget again - I will always wait and aim for this level (or higher) - I do however need to shift this X800 and the rest of the machine thats grown up around it
