so i was finishing off my win 7 htpc install last night, got my movies on for the blu-ray media center integration etc.

ive got powerdvd 7 for blu-ray and hd-dvd playback but when it asks to go off and install the latest patch the install fails, it uninstalls the old version during the patch so you have to go back and reinstall the whole lot again.

running the patch in compatibility mode for XP didnt work. the internets doesnt throw up any useful information on the generic "patching failed" error.

does anyone else use pdvd7 on w7 and has anyone else come across this or should i just bin it off and get pdvd9? realistically how many hd-dvds am i ever going to end up with but the option would have been nice..

I had the same problem, ended up duel booting XP with Windows 7 (XP only used for HD-DVD’s) and PowerDVD 9 used in Windows 7. However, I have just tried ‘arcsoft total media 3’ and can’t recommend it enough, everything works, I can now play HD-DVD from a disk or the hard drive, obviously BluRay is supported (again from the Disk or Hard Drive), I’d say (if you’ve got HD-DVDs) ditch PowerDVD and get arcsoft total media 3.

interesting.. arcsoft installs no problems.

however the picture is TERRIBLE, its all blocky. the paramount intro for iron man was showing 4 times in the same screen just now..

any ideas?

Erm not sure, is the graphics card option ticked in Video (is it helping the CPU). Works fine for me...i've tried Ironman

downloading pdvd9..

something odd has happened since installing arcsoft. whenever i reboot now i have to unplug and replug the HDMI before i get a signal on the TV..

Sounds bad, sorry it works great for me. System Retore to remove all trace of it...

Ironman did need a large update before it worked.

something has cocked this right up.. pdvd9 keeps crashing with stuttering which is hanging the whole machine..

ah well will have to wait till next week now.

I just tried Arcsoft and it's working great for me. It managed to play 3:10 to Yuma whereas Win DVD/Power DVD would get stuck at the menu screen. I didn't even know there was an alternative to these two until i saw this thread. And it plays HDDVD's to boot!

Thanks for the heads up ssmacc. Hope you get it sorted neil_g. I might give it a shot on Windows 7 when i install that in a few days and report back.

its got to be a driver issue, i'll have another tinker tonight and report back.. but i def want arcsoft over powerdvd.

if i cant get it working then options are:

go back to XPMCE/Vista
sell off the 3650 and replace it

Just to help out I was banging my head against a brick wall in windows 7 with both powerdvd 7 and 9 not playing back hd-dvd discs. Even arcsoft 3 wouldn;t do it.

It turn out the last three beta Nvidia drivers were causing the problems.

yeah ive got a driver only ATI package which im going to try later rather than the one bundled with the control panel stuff. hopefully thatll install okay..

ffs its doing it in vista too.

common elements - graphics driver and video hardware and hdmi cable..

am i really going to have to go back to XP just to prove its the vista/7 driver thats crap??

i'll give it a whirl (wont be until tues night now as im away for the weekend).

my boss has recommended a ati 4550 pci-e which he has no problems with which i might try out too.. its only 30 odd quid. i can sell the 3650 to get some funds back too.

i'll let you all know what happens tues..

cheers for the help
