I need some help - I have my Medai PC hooked up to my surround sound processor via digital S/PDIF out, but it was playing a bluray movie through powerdvd in stereo.

I changed the config of power dvd to use S/PDIF but hear no sound? Interestingly, when I select audio option [so you get a narrator explain the film] it plays the movie and the narrator in surround! select just normal audio and no sound again!? What's going on?

I also tested Media centre. in the setup menu there is a surround test that works fine through all speakers, so it must be a setting in powerdvd.

Are you using the bundled software that came with the drive? Iirc this will only give you stereo via SPDIF. You need to upgrade it to the full version.

I'm sitting in India right now so can't confirm how my machine's configured, but I've got a Pioneer BD drive and am using the supplied software to view BDs. I'm running VHP 32bit and have the output set to SP/DIF and it definitely works perfectly in all the BDs I've watched so far.

I think (and feel free to correct me here, anyone) that the "stereo restriction" is limited to analogue output only.

The Dobbly indicator on my Sony receiver goes bright blue, so the SP/DIF is without a doubt passing the bitstream to the receiver for decoding to 5.1
