I was asked to troubleshoot a problem for a friend last week whose computer would hang when he pluged his new digital camera into the USB ports on his ancient PC (5 years old). After a bit of faffing about i got him to purchase a powered USB hub and this has completly solved the problem.
However, it has also thrown up a problem of its own. When the computer shuts down it doesn't completly turn off as the fan keeps spinning on the CPU heatsink and the power light on the front of the PC stays on. Surprisingly, these also stay on if you pull the power lead from the back of the power supply on the PC!
It seems therefore, that the powered USB hub is 'back powering' a small part of the system preventing it from shutting down.
Any suggestions as to how i can cure this?
Many thanks
