Gf is looking for a small laptop to replace her ageing desktop. It'll be used for photography so Lightroom and Photoshop alongside the usual word and internet browsing. It'll be used at home connected to a monitor, on the lap and when she is away as a seperate machine (so good battery life and screen).

Basically she wants an 11" MacBook air that runs Windows... She's not a fan of the surface because it won't be too useable on her lap... Asus used to do a good 11" but I don't think they have updated it, other than that I'm running out of ideas...

What she doesn't want/need:
No need for a dedicated gfx card (integrated gfx is fine for PS and LR AFAIK)
Gaming "style" - not 100% sure on that but I'm pretty certain...
Bulky - needs to be light and portable
Atom (or similar) processor - just not powerful enough for editing RAW.

So yeah... Erm... Any recommendations?

What's the budget? Sony do the Vaio Pro 11 which has haswell but it's not cheap. Failing that is she really against a 13 inch ultrabook? They aren't exactly bulky or heavy and there is much more choice.

Small, cheap, powerful. Pick two! Only thing I can think of is that (quite old now) 11.6 Inch Clevo, but a quick Google doesn't bring one up any more. Problem with that anyway is that its bulky and I have heard some problems with them.

Erm, is a 11.6 inch touch screen tablet with a last generation i5 in it that comes with a keyboard as well (so kinda like a laptop), but it's on a competitors site and does come in at £600 with an i5 and 8gb of ram (only a 64GB SSD).

For that price you're better off getting a tiny netbook or a tablet and a desktop PC.

I think we looked at the venue, quite bulky and I3 would be the bare minimum really, preferably an I5 or 7 with 8GB of RAM. I'll have a look at that though, thanks.

Also had a look at one of the VAIOs however I don't think it was the pro, just one of the S series. A slightly smaller version of the old Z series would be perfect! Problem with the 13" books is they won't fit in the laptop pouch in her camera bag.

Budget, doesn't really matter to an extent, just depends on the right machine. Is that tablet an own brand one or branded? If the latter can you name it so I can search for it?

I agree totally, personally I think she should get something like an iPad mini and a replacement desktop, or a powerful 13" laptop and a tablet but she's insistent on one device. The Surface Pro 2 would be perfect except it doesn't stand up independently for lap use (or at least as well as a proper laptop).

Well, if you happened to Google for "Gemini: 10 Point Multi-Touch" and then click on say the 3rd link down you would get there.

Just checked again, maximum specification is an i5 3337U Duel Core with 8 GB of ram and a SSD inside it. I don't know about battery life or anything, but its this VS a surface pro 2. CPU wise, the surface 2 wins as well as in screen resolution, but this has more RAM and costs less.

You stated that your misses doesn't like the surface 2 as it won't sit right on her lap but I've a 10inch windows 8 tablet that has a keyboard dock and don't have any problems with it sitting in a chair doing some light work. Get the surface 2 keyboard along with it and you will be golden. Problem is that a surface with a keyboard that has 8gb ram along side the i5 will set you back £1,000+, but if money isn't that much of an issue go get it!
