Hi guys,

I want to do some mods to my desk (i realise it's not a case mod, but its where the case will be sitting) by adding in a 120mm extractor fan to get rid of all the hot air in the place where my computer sits.

Now the thing is i have no idea how to mod/get a case fan so that it doesnt rely on a PSU for power.

Do you guys know how to overcome this?

Find yourself a approx 12v plug in power supply such as those for a router or a home cordless telephone. Wire the red wire of the fan to the positive wire on the power source and the black wire to the negative. It might be easier to chop the power connector off the power supply and go straight wire to wire.

If you want a lower speed try a lower rated power supply such as 9v or 7v.

If you have one of those multi voltage adaptors that would work too.

Just make sure your chosen power supply can do around 300mA.

just dont use a delta fan! if its not the whine of the blades at over 9000 db any stray body part will loose flesh if you dont put a grill on it. just a heads up. grills under desks are good! i took some meat off my toe once when i was using fans to stop my radiator burning my knees. poor, poor toe :( although the delta was running at 9v it was still stupidly loud. you can also run fans off a PP7 9v battery, you wont get the same as a proper power unit but battery packs can be bought via component stores like craplins or something similar might have to spellcheck that :P
