Hello,

I'ts been a bit of a while since i last upgraded a graphics card so had a good look around here for advice given to others before buying a nice new XFX HD 4890 from of course overclockers uk :)

I have now got two questions

1. The whole power supply issue has me baffled as just as I had got it in my head about using the two seperate 6 pin to molex converters on seperate 12 volt rails the insstructions tell you not to do this even though the card comes with two molex to 6 pin converters ?

so am i ok using these connectors or not as i'm not connecting anything up till i'm sure !

2. it says on the website when you buy it that you get two games " tom clancy's HAWX " and " Battle forge "
are both these games on the one DVD ? or am i missing a game as i only got a Hawx disk ?

the first question of course is a lot more important than the second but thought i'd just ask while i'm here :)

thank you guys for help given in the past

best regards
Ian

What power supply have you got? I'm guessing since it doesn't appear to have any 6 pin PCI-E connectors it's quite old?

You should have got 2 seperate discs for the games, so if you didn't receive battleforge then send them a webnote and they should get back to you through that.

hi,

It's an " Oryxx " rated at 650 watts and it's about 18 months old but i like it mainly because it only has one huge fan and is deadly quiet

I think 650 watts should cover it I'm also running a 6600 quad but not loads of hard drives and blue ray players eating up power

webnote ? do you mean e-mail ? or do they have a system for contacting the sales team directly i've missed lol

thanks for your help i await your thoughts

Ian

You have a new CPU and a state-of-the-art GPU and you are powering them with a very cheap unit designed over 8 years ago.
Notice is has a -5v rail...those were used to power ISA slots and that was phased out about 7 years ago. Also back then the major draw was the +5v rail and these days it's the +12v rail. So this unit is being cross-loaded in a way that it was never intended to be and having to work extra hard to keep it's voltages within tolerances. I think you should upgrade before it fries and takes some of your new components with it.

Hello,

they make quite high performance stuff the model i have is here http://www.oryxx.co.uk/psu-s/650w-oryxx-ox650sd-extreme-psu/extreme-1/
only differance is over the last year they've added a six pin pci-e plug

I just need to know if it is safe for the graphics card to be wired up using the drongals provided on seperate 12 volt lines or are the instructions totally wrong

I havent got a second DVD or a voucher code that i can find :(

best regards
Ian

I would not call your PSU high performance. I would not trust my system with that PSU. It's totally your choice.

Their newer stuff wont be the same PSU but with PCI-E connectionm, the whole internals will be totally different.

I'd go with everyone else in the thread and get a new PSU. The fact that it wasn't designed to cope with what you want to put through it, I wouldn't want to risk your nice new components.

On the shop homepage there is a link to contact us, the webnote system is linked on this page

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/webnote.php

Just choose the one that suits you. They tend to be pretty quick at getting a reply back to you.

hi,

no sorry guys i had no idea you actually sat on your own forums
that must be a bit of an industry first on it's own thumbs up*

I can see now that although maybe a couple of years ago these supplies were cumfy in what they were being asked to do now they might not be so cumfy

they only discharge 22 amps across the 12 volt rails which i suppse these new graphics cards must eat up big time :(

I'll look into a power supply update also and thanks for letting me know the danger i was about to put my new goodies under so i can get it sorted pre-fire lol

best regards

Hi - I just received my 4890 and didn't get the Battle Forge DVD either.

Can you let me know if you have been advised how to get this.

I've sent an enote to sales I'm just wondering how you got on.

Thanks.

You're not wrong! By comparison, the Corsair HX620W outputs 50 amps on the 12V. You'll notice that 50*12 is 600, meaning that the Corsair PSU is capable of providing almost the entire 620W on the 12V line, where your PSU can manage a maximum of 264W. That's the key difference between a good PSU and a no-name one - the devil is in the detail.

Another difference is that the Corsair unit will be able to deliver that wattage continuously, where the cheaper unit will probably buckle once it heats up a bit. Generic PSUs are notoriously over-specified, and it's unlikely that the Oryxx unit will be able to supply 650W at any voltage for more than a few seconds. By comparison, if you read this review, you can see that they managed to draw 746W from the Corsair 620W before it gave in!

Also, should the generic unit die, it would quite possibly take out half your components with it, where a decent PSU will tend to sacrifice itself and save your hardware.

Always buy PSUs of a reputable brand. It's the most important piece of hardware in your system :) I have the Corsair HX520 and the build quality is very good.

corsair, be quiet, PC&Cooling, tagan etc are all good brands and backed by good reviews the rest have had dodgy reviews onces or twice I have noticed (yes I m aware there are loads of companies (good companies)

I would say a HX620 would be nice for that
