powering motherboards without cpu and ram

Hey guys, i just bought a 2nd hand motherboard off ebay and i want to see if it would first turn on before i installed all my hardware into it, (no cpu ram ect..) or is it not a good idea?

can do it,mb will just light up if it has onboard led lights thats all,to test it properly you need cpu/ram

Thanks for that,i just did not want to go thu the hassle off installing the cpu to find out the board was/is DOA
