Powerline Adapter Woes...

Evening all... I'll briefly explain my circs.. and hope somebody can tell me if I'm being thick or not.

I have the new Sky Q hub.. and it works perfectly. All my wireless devices work fine.. No issues at all.

The boss has to use VPN and the software only accepts a wired connection. To save running loads of cable, I bought a pair of TP LINK power line adapters which in isolation works great.

I also have a CCTV system which uses another pair of TP LINK power line adapters, which again, in isolation work fine..

The issue I have is when both sets are plugged in - neither work.

I (perhaps foolishly) thought that would work?

I've successfully paired the adapters but still no joy.

Both of the router end adapters are plugged into the same plug socket, side by side - is this the issue? They're both on a spur off another socket on the downstairs power circuit...

I can find nowhere that says this won't work!?

Cheers in advance.

Tom

You don' need 4, just three, one from router to mains and one where each device is needed.
There is also an issue with Sky Q and powerline adapters but I think it's only with the Sky Q mini box.

Does that mean that I can use the CCTV and the boss can use her VPN software simultaneously?

I've just read (I think!) about secure pairing them, in effect creating two separate networks off the router, which I think would work... but I'll be the first to admit, I'm clueless!

Hmm maybe some reading up on how a local area network works and how the Internet is accessed from it.
Don't have time now to do that, sorry. I'll see if I can find a diagram as a picture paints a thousand word.
Andi.

I think the main issue I have is that I'm not using DHCP on the network video recorder. It has to be a static IP for the port forwarding and DDNS to work, whereas the boss' laptop, using the VPN IS using DHCP...

I've tried all permutations I can think of... balls.

Cheers again for your help thus far!

You can create two separate Powerline networks. You just need to make sure the two sets are definitely using different keys. If you don't you'll create a loop when you connect both sets to the router and nothing will work. If there's a software utility install it as you should be able to see the keys in use and check they're okay.

There's no reason why you should need to create two separate networks. Pair three of the adapters together and you should be good to go. Just make sure only one of them is connected to the router.

It almost certainly isn't a DHCP issue. The Powerline adapters really won't care about the TCP/IP side of things anymore than a dumb network switch would.

I use DHCP with my CCTV, occasionally if I have a significant power fail it will get a new IP address but in most cases the 'network' will restart with the same addresses. If a new address is allocated just change the port forwarding. I think it is also possible with some routers to allocate a specific IP to a device or sometimes allocate a renewal time so devices get the same address. Port forwarding and VPN should only need to be controlled at the router, the actual devices can still connect to a normal LAN.
HTH :-)
Andi.

BTW your sig takes me to a blank grey site - should it link to this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkXNSNI3B7c :):D:cool:

Cheer gents.

I think I've solved it as suggested above (by you both!)

I've reserved certain ip addresses for some network audio devices, as well as the cctv and that was where my problem lay. I think.

Either way, it's working!

Cheers and yup - definitely the McFly song! Unashamed!
