Powerline adapters as a temporary measure

Hi Folks

Moving house in a couple of weeks, and whilst I will be doing a load of cable runs, I need to get going. The house is from 1780, and has thick stone walls... so I'm not convinced I'll be able to just put my unifi kit into Mesh Mode.

The problem is, I need to get signal in several locations... I probably need 6 powerline adapters, two of which will be going into outbuildings.
This is going to be totally unusable, right?

I can't seem to work out which the best ones are. The last time I had some back in ~2019 I had 'AV2000' things. It looks like the 'new best thing' is something like these.

TP-Link PG2400P KITPassthrough Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, Advanced Protocol G.hn MIMO Pack of 2

I should be clear, I've got a load of unifi kit, so I don't need any wifi aps.

How old are the electrics, when was it last rewired?

I'd probably jump on those Cat6 runs asap first :D

buy 2 to test first.

hard to say but old wiring & outbuildings, it could be fun. Isn't wiring limited regardless of what they say the speed is? never had more than about 80mbps on a good day with my old ones

How temporary? Can you lash in Cat6 clipped to the surfaces of things if you're going to be decorating anyway?

For the outbuildings you want a wireless solution, either a point-to-multipoint setup or two bridges depending on how things are physically laid out.

Without doubt I would hardwire to key location and add access points as required.

If the wiring is modern enough, then powerlines based on the G.hn standard should be ok on it. I use Devolo Magic 2's here. They were a bit problem prone when they first came out. But they work well now on the latest firmware, as long as I have all the power saving/standby crap disabled. However the more adapters you add, the slower it can get. YMMV

I have some experience in buildings of this age, 7ft doors, 12ft ceilings, foot thick walls made of stone and solid double course brick - and not the modern aerated crap, hand run plaster cornice that is obscenely expensive to replace etc. I cheated, pulled floorboards and dropped AP's in the floor space in one install and on another went into the loft, other runs are hidden behind drainpipes, in via air bricks, etc. and for the most part running cable on each floor was a case of following the various electricians/plumbers who had renovated over the years to add central heating/sockets and just pulling the boards they had used, this is 10x easier if you do it before moving things into the property.
