Question for guys who know these things! Do powerline adapters have to be the same make etc to work on your home powerline network?

No, but you need to check they're using compatible standards.

Should be fine then - some makes use a different standard though, so make sure you check before buying. I'd still be tempted to stick to the same make/model where possible, too.

There cheap enough and will do the job,i have some £25 200 plugs and they have been on 24/7 for 2 years without a single problem.

Some places have the 500mbps ones for £26 a pair. They work well, whatever you do don't buy the belkin 1gb ones if they are still about. They were terrible and didn't work as well as the 200mbps ones. I am pretty sure that they were all taken off the shelves and rebranded and 200mbps units they were that bad.
