oh I do like to be beside the seaside
Hi

I'm trying to help my Aunty improve the range of her wireless network as she's had an extention built (she lives in a house will walls about 4 feet thick).
Unfortunately I don't live locally to her, so I've got her to give me what details she can, I'm due to visit in about a month and want to sort what stuff (if any) I need to take up with me.

The builders installed the following.
At the moment she's using 2 TP-Link powerline ethernet sockets, 1 by her her main router (BT HomeHub) and the 2nd in a room next to the new extention.
This 2nd ethernet powerline is then connected to TL-WR940N router, which has been setup as it's own different network (different SSID etc).

I want to have the same network going across the whole of the house and I think these are my choices are either

1. Change the config of the WR940N to extend the wireless signal, due to the thickness of the walls I don't think the BT router's network will be that strong (if at all) where the router is, can it use the ethernet connection via the powerline plugs to extend the wireless?

or

2. Buy a new TP powerline plug with built in wifi like the TL-WPA8630P https://www.tp-link.com/uk/products/details/cat-18_TL-WPA8630P.html linked up to the current powerline plug by the BT router

or

3. If I can get a decent Wifi signal near the new extention then use a range extender like TL-WA860RE https://www.tp-link.com/uk/products/details/cat-10_TL-WA860RE.html

Will any/all of these work?
Any recommendations of which is best?

I'm not worried if using wifi extenders will slow the network down as she lives in the sticks and the broadband speed is pants :D

Thanks.

Reconfigure the WR940N as an access point (Google 'wr940n access point mode').

Assign it the same wireless settings (except the channel) as the main router.

Job done.

Will that use the wireless signal from main router or the ethernet from the powerline?

The Ethernet.

It's functionally the same as your option 2 in the opening post.

The end game is for her to give commands to an Echo Dot when she's in the lounge (where the main router is) and this will control smart lights/switchers that will be connected via the TP Link router.

This will work ok?
