Powerline and wireless router question

Hey guys, I just wanted to clear the air with what im planning and to make sure that it will work.

At the moment, i'm with virgin fibre and the internet comes into my house downstairs into the virgin hub (modem/router). Now thats fine for my computers downstairs since they get a decent wireless signal off it and it also connects to sky via ethernet.

Now this is where im not sure if it will work, I hope ill compromise and still get a good option. Up stairs i have my PC and Xbox, which are both connected to the hub through WiFi, its ok, but I have 60mb virgin and i only really get 30mb max upstairs, it also is very limited towards the end of the house.

I wanted to add a powerline adapter from my Virgin hub to a socket upstairs, I then wanted to add a wireless router to the end of it and have an ethernet connection to my PC and WiFi connects for the Xbox and other devices. Is this possible to create another WAP, and if so, will it have to be a different SSID? or can i use it to extend my WiFi off the virgin hub?

I presume the router will be fine for my PC since it will pretty much be acting as a switch. Its the WiFi im concerned with. Any advice appreciated. What is my best option?

Thanks in advance.

You can get powerline adaptors with built in wifi that will just act as an access point so will appear as the same network to your devices, most wireless routers also allow you to set them up in AP mode.

For starters, 60Mbit may be pushing it for homeplug devices. I know they are advertised as being 200Mbit/500Mbit/1Gbit speeds but in my experience they don't get anywhere near that.

I live in a new build apartment so all the electrical wiring is new but the best I got out of my 200Mbit kit was around 40Mbit. A 500Mbit kit I tried was even slower.

You may be no worse off just getting a wifi router and setting it up as a bridge/AP.

Thanks for the reply, I was just going to buy a normal Adapter since i have a wireless router laying around already. As for the AP mode, that will just extend my WiFi i take it? if so, that's the best option, thanks.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate homeplugs may be a bit dodgy, but im sure it will be better than my current set-up, I want a dedicated line to my PC from the ethernet, but since i cannot run an ethernet from my Virgin hub to my PC homeplugs seem the best option. As for the router, sorry to sound a bit of a twonk, but i take it that it can still act as a switch (for the physical ethernet) as well as the AP bridge for wireless?
