So I am currently running off of a wireless signal from a G router (can't change) and my connection is less than great and am therefore looking at alternatives.

Obviously it would be ideal to run a cable from the router to the pc but that means ripping up the carpets/drilling through walls/hassle and I am therefore looking at some of the power line adapts where you simply use the electric system to route the network. As I do a lot of gaming ping speed and network stability is of paramount importance and is the main reason for me trying to switch from the wireless, would these homeplub style adapts offer better performance than a wireless signal?

I live out in the country side so the internet access itself isn't ideal - 40ms ping, 1.9mbps DL so there is even more reason to try to squeeze out every little bit!

Lastly, if I were to get a wired connection by any means - would it be worth getting the bigfoot killer 2100 NIC? I have read mixed reviews about it but frankly I use the net so much even a 3-5ms ping speed increase with some added stability would be amazing!

powerline is definitely a must

our best selling powerline kits are the tp-link 200mbps and the edimax 500mbps

both of these kits are very good quality and literally plug and play.

I have been using the edimax for a week now and would not even consider going back to wireless. the connection is stable and works perfectly

i am currently writing a review about it which should be up by the weekend

i have not tried a bigfoot card myself but they are our best selling network card.
a cheaper alternative may be the intel network card which is just as good albeit not gamer orientated.

I have the powerline kit rjk linked, the tp-link one and it works really well after having been on wireless for over a year, my pings are down and my connection is generally much smoother too. Well worth the purchase.

Thanks for the reply rjk, with the powerline kits - is there advantages to going to the real high end models over the mid range or will the difference be minimal on a home network?

it depends,
i got the 500mbps edimax one because i just wanted the fastest speeds i could get.
communicating with my nas downstairs was important to me so i wanted quick data transfers

i had some belkin powerline adapters before which were awful, wireless was better

i would reccomend the edimax and the tp link based on the fact that the return rates for each are minimal which is always the indication of an excellent product.

TP link has a 500mbps kit coming soon too. i anticipate the end of the month but i am asking for it every time i order our tp link stock.

Another thumbs up for the TP-Link 200mbps here. I use it to connect my router to an AppleTV2 in the lounge running XBMC as I had intermittent buffering problems when using wireless, and playing with channels, aerials and placement of devices just didn't seem to help. It's been rock solid since then. Heartily recommended!
