Powerline network query

Im running 3 powerlines around the home to access the internet and home server. But the speed when transferring documents isnt that great around 5mb.

Configuration is as follows:-
Hallway = Sky Router -> Powerline TP-PA411 (No1)

Main Room = Powerline TP-PA411 (No2) -> TPlink gigabit switch -> SKY HD / PS3 / Media Center computer

Spare Room = Powerline TP-PA411 (No3) -> Home Server

Am i connecting this correctly - was thinking of adding a gigabit switch between the sky router and the first powerline would this help network transfer speeds?

Any ideas?
 
No the powerlines are plugged directly into the wall socket. The other equipment is plugged into surge protected extension cables.
 
Not in the slightest. You have a couple problems with doing that:

A) Your LAN speed is nothing to do with your router in this instance, your data travels from your server, across the PLN and to the PS3/Media centre PC, so upgrading so adding a gigabit switch between the router and switch would be pointless.

B) Your Sky router and your TP-PA411 both have 100Mb ethernet ports, so putting a 1000Mb switch in between them will achieve nothing anyway.

Also, do you mean 5mb/s or 5MB/s. The first is very slow, even for the PLN adaptors you have, where as 5MB/s is about right.
 
So in order to improve the speed i would need to get a gigabit switch between the router and replace the existing powerlines with gigabit versions.

No, as your LAN speeds are nothing to do with the router. Adding a gigabit switch and plugging it into a 100Mb router is pointless and a waste of money.
Even if you had gigabit PLNs it would still be pointless as it'd run at 100Mb for a connection to the net which is a lot slower.

This will probably help, but you wont get gigabit speeds across them but they could well be a lot faster.
