Hi Folks,

In the process of re-stringing together the network at home, moving fixed devices away from wireless onto 1gbit homeplugs (Belkin, already have 4 in a box somewhere) - no opportunity to move to proper gbit ethernet cabling at present.

So, proposed setup is as follows:

BT HomeHub 2.0 (100mbit ethernet) -> Homeplug -> wall
--> Homeplug --> old 100mbit switch --> BT Vision Box & PS 3
--> Homeplug --> Sun Ultra20 box running various media servers, etc
--> Homeplug --> Mac

+ numerous sundry wireless devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc)

My question relates to bandwidth between those items on the Homeplug/Wired networking.

Will the route between, for example, the Ultra20 and the iMac (both with gigabit nics and wiring) operate at 1g/bit speed, or will it be routed via the HomeHub and thus restricted to the 100mbits which it's wired ethernet ports supports?

If Homeplug to Homeplug connections will be at 1gbit speeds, then it'll be worth my investing in a 1gbit switch at the PS3/Vision end of things, to allow streaming of higher bitrate movie files, etc. But if not, then I shant bother.

Thanks,

G.

I believe you'll be limited to the speed the switch supports.

Homeplug speeds can be quite variable, so there’s no way of knowing if you’d benefit from having a gigabit switch until you’ve tried them.
