Powerline noise/bandwidth

Hi all,

I've been trying to rig up an internet connection to an outside office/studio (containing two computers) using powerline adapters.

The main house gets a solid 20Mbps download speed which is fine. However, the powerline signal has to pass through two fuse boxes and some pretty dubious wiring before it reaches the outside office, and resultant download speeds are between 5-200kbps in the studio (often the lower end of that). Obviously this is pretty crappy and disconnections are also frequent. I've gone through the usual routine of switching off as much heavy duty electrical stuff as is practical.

I'm currently only using 200Mbps adaptors. Would upgrading to 500Mbps be likely to make any difference, or should I give up and look at drilling holes and running some ethernet cable?

Thought that might be the answer :p

Looking closely at the previous wiring spaghetti I reckon I can probably squeeze a cat5e through one of the existing holes out of the main house - would that connected to a basic switch in the office do the job do you think? I'm going to need a 30m run and would like to avoid drilling any more holes if possible.

Most of the cable run will be exposed and along external walls. Any need for two cables or more robust cabling?

You can get external grade network cable that has different jacket material. Even standard network cable will last years before the jacket UV degrades.

No real need for multiple cables in the situation you describe.

Nice one. External grade cable ordered.

One last question: it would be nice to integrate a wireless access point to the extension. What's the cheapest way of having a WAP + ethernet switch?
