Powerline or WiFi?

Hi everyone, I have just purchased a new computer for work, which I purchased from this website with help from some great people on the forums in this thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18531291&page=1

The system has an ethernet port but no WiFi capabilities at this moment in time (still waiting for delivery). At work, I have an ethernet port in the wall of my office. That's fine, but as I work as a lecturer but I spend around 3-4 months of the year away from the office working from home, I would like to make use of the system at home. I have a wireless router, but it is in the opposite corner of the house (downstairs in the lounge) to where I would like the PC (upstairs in my office).

Would it be more efficient to buy something which would enable WiFi capability in my PC (I apologise, I am quite new to all this), or one of these powerline things?
YOUR BASKET
1 x TP-Link AV200 200Mbps Mini Powerline Starter Kit Ver:3.0 (TL-PA211KIT) £29.99
1 x Trendnet 200 AV Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (TPL-308E2K) £21.95
Total : £61.84 (includes shipping : £8.25).

Try the Powerline adapters. Assuming they don't take a dislike to your home's wiring they usually work as well, or better than, a wireless connection.

So powerline it is.

The powerline I go for, do I then have to buy matching extenders? or will a Tenda adapter work with a Dlink starter kit?

You need at least two of them, one at the router and the other at the PC. You can then then add other adapters individually if you want to connect something in a different location.

They're usually cheaper if bought as pairs.

Adapters from different manufacturer's should work together, but sometimes they don't.

AV500 adapters are getting cheaper. If you can find a decent offer they aren't much more than the AV200 versions.

Ahh I see :),

Do they work across an entire house's electricity, or just the smaller circuits which can be individually turned off by the fuse box?

Depends on how good your broadband is,i have the homeplugs and with the downstairs on plugged into a extension lead and the top one plugged directly into the wall i get 50meg from a 100 meg connection.

Dont bother me in the slightest and 50 meg is more than enough for me and 50meg is more than what most people get anyway :)

weirdly powerlines don't work in my new build house but worked fine in an old farmhouse where the circuits where nightmare. I suspect I'm the exception though.

Powerline.

Just today had to move my PC to the rear room in our house, which was built in 1890 and I have no idea when it was last re-wired. Going from a 15 metre ethernet cable in another room to a powerline setup, I was worried about loss of speed, especially as I pay for fibre.

I have lost absolutely zero speed. If anything, less than a quarter of a meg from before.

I get 56 down and 17 up. Sitting with a laptop next to the router on wifi I get 20 down max.
